Rico Gatson’s newly installed “Beacons” at 167 St. (B,D), celebrates the energy and spirit of individuals who have been influential within the Bronx community and have received positive acclaim for their cultural, political and artistic contributions. Gatson chose to highlight eight figures for “Beacons”: Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Maya Angelou, Reggie Jackson, Celia Cruz, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, Gil Scott-Heron and Tito Puente. Sourced from black and white photographs and translated into glass mosaic by Miotto Mosaics, these iconic personas are set within beams of light and color, radiating with beauty and pride and inviting travelers to reflect on the past as well as find inspiration for the future.
